“Bent Knee breaks new stylistic and temperamental ground”The Boston Globe

Bent Knee is unlike any band you’ve ever heard. Its borderless sound combines myriad influences from across the rock, pop, minimalist, and avant-garde spectrums into a seamless, thrilling whole. Its forthcoming album Land AnimalBent Knee’s first for InsideOutMusic/Sony, released on June 23, 2017 —takes its sound to a new level. It offers a suite of songs full of addictive hooks, lush melodies and enthralling twists and turns that capture the reality of life in the 21st Century—a reality of people and nations in the midst of tumultuous change. It also communicates a ray of hope and desire for listeners to embrace the fact that they’re not alone in their struggles.

PRESS HERE to watch the beautiful, provocative video for “Land Animal.” Directed by Greg Bowan, the video explores the inner conflicts people have as they endure daily stresses and lose the big picture view on what really matters in life.

Bent Knee formed in 2009 as a democratic collective determined to push the boundaries of pop and rock. Lead singer and keyboardist Courtney Swain’s soaring vocals are instantly arresting. Guitarist Ben Levin is one of the most dynamic and versatile guitarists around, shifting between the raging and raucous to the sublime and meditative. Bassist Jessica Kion and drummer Gavin Wallace-Ailsworth combine into an enthralling rhythm section that’s equal parts powerhouse and nuance. Violinist Chris Baum’s kinetic violin work provides drama, grace and intrigue. World-class producer and live sound designer Vince Welch weaves it all together with a captivating, expert touch.

The band has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Its last two albums, 2016’s Say So and 2014’s Shiny Eyed Babies, were hailed as significant art-rock achievements. The group has performed hundreds of shows across the world to date. During the fall of 2016, the band played for ecstatic audiences as an opener for the U.S. leg of The Dillinger Escape Plan's farewell tour ahead of signing with InsideOutMusic/Sony.

“We’re very excited to be working with InsideOutMusic/Sony,” said Swain. “It’s wonderful to have our music reach a lot of new ears across the globe through them. It’s an honor to join their roster of prestigious artists and we look forward to a long relationship with the label.”

The band is now on tour in America. During April and May, it opens for the expansive rock act Thank You Scientist, known for its combination of progressive and jazz influences. Bent Knee then continues in June with a headlining tour. See full routing below, and PRESS HERE for more information.

PopMatters "Best of 2016"

PopMatters "Best of 2016"

Via PopMatters —

"Like countless other remarkable artists, art rock sextet Bent Knee formed out of the revered Berklee College of Music in Boston. Often channeling similar chamber music elements as the Dear Hunter and Emanuel and the Fear, they fuse classical and modern timbres to produce something truly powerful, experimental, and diverse. While their first two records certainly introduced all that makes Bent Knee special, "Say So" takes their creativity, fearlessness, and conceptuality to a whole new level. Dense with “dark[ness] and infused with themes focusing on the emergence of personal demons, unwanted situations[,] and the difficulty of conquering them”, it’s a brilliant effort.

"Say So" spoils its listener from the get-go, as opener “Black Tar Water” is a breathtakingly hypnotic, multilayered, and a triumphant slice of self-reflection and empowerment. Courtney Swain seizes her redemption with the overwhelming yet eloquent force of say, Tori Amos or Björk, while each new textural coating adds radiance and weight. It’s a masterpiece onto itself, yet it’s only the start of the magic, as “Leak Water”, though a bit more straightforward and compressed, is no less bold and varied. Later, “EVE” interweaves soft songwriting with furious orchestration, while the final track, “Good Girl”, is a bittersweet commentary on the subjugation of women. Of course, there’s also “Commercial”, an off-the-wall trip that induces the intricate insanity of Frank Zappa. Perhaps the greatest achievement of "Say So", however, is that while many of the most anticipated progressive rock albums of 2016 disappointed (The Astonishing, anyone?), it proved that sometimes it’s the lesser known releases that contain the most magnificent material."

Courtney Swain in Keyboard Mag

Courtney Swain in Keyboard Mag

"Bent Knee is no ordinary musical collective. A masterful mashup of electronica, progressive pop and art rock (think Jeff Buckley meets Rush meets Edith Piaf), the band has received widespread acclaim for both their live shows and their new release, Say So, out now on the Cuneiform label. And keyboardist, vocalist, and front-woman Courtney Swain has been there from the very beginning."

Many thanks to Jon Regan and Keyboard Magazine for featuring Courtney in this month's issue! Read the full article at http://www.keyboardmag.com/artists/1236/courtney-swain-of-bent-knee/59826

Bent Knee Defies Genres and Expectations (Front Row Boston)

Bent Knee Defies Genres and Expectations (Front Row Boston)

We recently sat down with Tori Bedford of WGBH to chat about band dynamics, creative process, and our new album, Say So. You can read the full article at http://goo.gl/s53gtn.

"That’s the beauty of Bent Knee — it is perhaps one-sixth prog rock, as far as Wallace-Ailsworth is concerned. The other fractions are just as varied; Baum’s precision and polish, Levin’s rap, musical theatre, and improv-influenced style, Kion’s experimental nature, Swain, who brings unparalleled power and intensity from classically-trained roots, and Welch, who fuses everything together. No one genre can accurately encompass the lovable weirdness of Bent Knee.. both personally and musically, [they] continue to push themselves out of their comfort zone, trying everything in every direction."

Full press release below:

This has been an incredible year for Bent Knee across the board, with its third album Say So (Cuneiform Records) receiving a unanimously rave reception from national and global media, including The Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, NPR, and Consequence of Sound.

Fresh off a triumphant European tour, the exhilarating live act is proud to announce it’s opening for legendary expansive metal band The Dillinger Escape Plan during the first half of its forthcoming U.S. fall tour. Prior to those dates, Bent Knee will headline across the East Coast, including a date in Toronto, Canada.

You can experience Bent Knee in action right this second while waiting for the forthcoming gigs. Five songs from its thrilling, upcoming full-length concert film Live at the Space are now available on YouTube.

Since its inception, Bent Knee has remained true to the incredible spectrum of its diverse musical personalities. Courtney Swain’s riveting vocals lead the way through often dark lyrical themes, while guitar virtuoso Ben Levin shifts seamlessly from melodic riffs to extreme dissonance, often at a moment’s notice. Bassist Jessica Kion and drummer Gavin Wallace-Ailsworth contribute deep grooves, full of unexpected accents and ornamentation that glue the boundary-pushing work together. Violinist Chris Baum soars atop and through the material, further expanding the group’s sonic palette, and producer/sound designer Vince Welch combines it all with understated brilliance.

The Wall Street Journal on "Say So"

The Wall Street Journal on "Say So"

We're thrilled that Say So is resonating with so many people. Jim Fusilli of The Wall Street Journal writes that the record is "equal parts ingenuity and deliciousness.. For all that’s happening on this album, there’s little bloat or self-indulgence, and even the longest tracks feel like concise statements. An accusation that there are too many ideas in a work of art is dispelled when they are mostly good ones, as is the case with Bent Knee and 'Say So'."

"Black Tar Water" Video Premiere (Boston Globe)

"Black Tar Water" Video Premiere (Boston Globe)

Our brand new music video for Black Tar Water, the second single from Say So (out 5/20 on Cuneiform Records), was just premiered by The Boston Globe. You can read the article and watch the film at https://goo.gl/vIGsbb.

Via The Globe:

"Bent Knee, a hard-working, stylistically uncontainable sextet of witty virtuosos whose members found one another at Berklee College of Music, is set to release its third studio LP, “Say So,” next week on the respected avant-rock indie label Cuneiform Records. Having performed the entire album at a Jamaica Plain concert in January and releasing a video for lead single Leak Water in April, the band notches up anticipation for the new LP with a second clip, this one for the moody song Black Tar Water. Via e-mail, Bent Knee bassist and backing vocalist Jessica Kion divulged some of the video’s secrets:

Black Tar Water is about escaping depression and cleaning up the mess it’s made of you. The lyrics circle around thoughts of deflated self-esteem, while the phrase ‘black tar water’ refers to anything evil or poisonous in the world. The music video spawned from the idea of escaping a bad situation and starting anew. The main character sheds his self-made shell and experiences a ‘matrix’-style rebirth as he tears down a barrier to become completed soaked in light.

“The creation of the video was really fun and quite challenging. With a budget under $2,000 and a crew of eight (five of which were band members), we filmed over the course of a 15-hour day inside of a small shed, with videography by Eric Freeman and stunning acting by Jake Brasch. [Bent Knee guitarist] Ben Levin and I acted as writers, directors, set designers, smoke-machine operators, food runners, makeup artists, editors, and producers. My brother Tyler Kion came up from New York just to lend a hand and artistic eye.”"

Say So comes out next Friday on Cuneiform Records. Preorders are available at https://goo.gl/mJJPwi.

Bent Knee announce new album, Say So; premiere “Leak Water” single/video (Consequence of Sound)

We're very excited to announce our new album, "Say So", out May 20th on Cuneiform Records. This collection of music has been in the works for quite some time, and we can't wait for you all to hear what we've been up to. Preorders are available at https://goo.gl/mJJPwi

A huge thanks to Consequence of Sound for announcing "Say So" and premiering the video for our first single, "Leak Water".

"Boston’s Bent Knee proudly occupy the grey area where baroque pop, rock, and the avant-garde meet, but even they are sometimes caught off guard by their intricately woven, surrealist stylings. The element of surprise and desire to fuse disparate sounds was felt throughout their sophomore record, 2014’s well-received "Shiny Eyed Babies". It shines through even brighter on follow-up album "Say So", due out May 20th through new label home Cuneiform."
